Borders Love

February 16, 2011

Well, it's official. From what I can gather, Borders has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. They owe massive amounts to publishers- I've read into the billions. As part of the bankruptcy filing, they agreed store closures. 200 hundred stores are closing their doors- 2 of which are the ones I go to. I am sad to see a bookstore close it's doors at all, let alone a bookstore that I frequent and enjoy.

It hasn't been a secret that Borders has been struggling for awhile. They have been ordering fewer amounts of books from publishers and sales have goon down. The ereader they offer hasn't helped them, nor have store events or the great coupons they offer. Sadly, the inevitable has happened.

I am sad to see the store I frequented the most go. My parents have a Borders by their house, so whenever we went to see them I'd go to the bookstore. I loved seeing the books on display. I loved the smell of the place when I walked in the doors. This was the store I discovered The Secret Identity of The Pink Carnation series. This was the store my oldest daughter found books that she loved, as well. I had a tradition of visiting the bookstore and walking over to the Nestle cookie store. I am heartbroken to see that tradition come to an end.

As of now I don't know when the doors close for good. I just know that I will miss having this store to walk through. Going to a bookstore has always been one of my stress relievers. It was also my pot at the end of a rainbow. So many treasures were awaiting my discovery. I feel like it's the end of an era.

NOOOOOOOO!
I'm going to end up in a town of 2 million people with 2 bookstores. This is terrible. Have they put out a list of the stores that are going to close?
I love my borders. I'll be so sad if it hits our store.

I'm praying that Borders will keep open the store that's closest to my mom's house. It was such a nice place to spend a few hours, when I was in Kansas for a visit(and I did buy books there, not just browse). As a writer, I'm excited about the potential of ebooks. But as a reader I can't imagine a world without brick and mortar bookstores.

L. Blanchard- I know there is. I think you can go to the bookstore website and find out there. I hope your store isn't on the list.

Libi- I couldn't agree with you more. I love spending a long time walking through a bookstore.

Hey Jen,
Wonderful post on Borders. I too will loose a great friend. Borders is a home away from home for my family. I have very few options now that they will close. Gone are the Friday Game nights, too. Very sad indeed.
See ya,
Dana

Dana- Thank you for reading it and commenting on it. I feel the same way as you do. A bookstore has alwqays been a HUGE part of my life, and it's sad to have one less one to go through.
